Hitting the Road Safely This Spring Break

Spring break is a great time to relax and reconnect with your children. Thinking about jumping in the car and seeing the sights? Here’s what you need to know before you head out.

  • Be up to date on vaccines. While flu season may seem miles away, it’s still possible to come down with this virus during the early spring. If traveling outside the country, consult your primary care physician about what shots your family needs before leaving for your trip.
  • Pack super snacks. Forgo greasy spoon diners and fast food chains by packing healthy snacks. Make sandwiches the night before and put them in a cooler with bottled water and fruit juice. Keep fruit on hand for a quick snack. (If you do expect to make a few stops at fast food restaurants, watch our special video about eating healthy foods on the go.)
  • Pick destinations everyone can enjoy. Your son might want to check out a ballpark, while your daughter may want to head to the beach. Plan ahead by choosing locations to visit throughout your trip so you and your children aren’t stuck in the car for long stretches of time.
  • Beat the on-the-road blues. Are the kids bored or constantly asking “Are we there yet?” Pack fun activities, including coloring books, word puzzles, books, magazines or tablets, and handheld game systems. Try playing road games like I Spy, Scavenger Hunt or A to Z, where your children have to name things they see or imagine working their way through the alphabet.

First Aid Kit + Activities = Fun, Safe Travels

Always be prepared. Having a first aid kit on hand means you can deal with life’s little scrapes and bruises. In addition to a list of your family’s current health conditions, medications and health insurance information, your first aid kit should include:

  • acetaminophen
  • allergy medicine
  • anti-diarrhea medicine
  • antiseptic
  • bandages
  • bug repellant
  • cotton balls
  • gauze
  • sunscreen
  • tweezers.
